NY Red-Light Camera Campaign Proves High Number of Violators

Published December 8, 2011 by Scott Gottlieb, Injury Law Attorney

Rochester signed an Arizona-based company to install red-light cameras at key intersections throughout the city to help deter drivers from the irresponsible behavior of running red lights.

At the intersection of Jay and State Streets, the police were pulling over and ticketing nearly 20 drivers per day for running the light. One year ago, the city installed the cameras, and has issued nearly 27,000 tickets to date with the help of the 20 cameras placed throughout the city.

Binghamton residents that travel to Rochester should be aware that the city takes red light enforcement seriously. Our NY car accident attorney urge all drivers to abide the law and stop at the lights as appropriate. Accidents caused by someone running a red-light are entirely preventable and can result in unnecessary tragedy to innocent victims.

The Rochester police started the program a year ago, and expects that it will take two or three years before they determine if the campaign to reduce the numbers of drivers from running the lights is effective. Thus far, the numbers of those getting tickets has not decreased.

Fifty dollar tickets are sent to violators in the mail. An unpaid fine will increase to $75, and eventually the car may be towed or booted if not paid at all. The city reports that approximately 50% of violators have paid their tickets to date. From July through October, the city had collected nearly $350,000 in revenue from the tickets.

The Arizona-based company, Red Flex Traffic Systems, guarantees the city will break even under their agreement.

When the city decided to implement the red-light cameras, they had expected that the numbers of tickets would decrease over time. The police are reporting that they have not yet seen that decline.

Drivers are making the choice that it is worth the fine to shave just a few minutes off their travel time. The dangers of racing through an intersection far outweigh the time that could be saved.

Our NY injury attorney know that traffic delays can impact important schedules, but those sharing the road with these hurried drivers should be wary. Binghamton drivers should leave plenty of time to arrive at their destinations.
